In 1845 Charles hovey, a wealthy merchant, purchased a high bluff overlooking Gloucester Harbor in Massachusetts and proceeded to erect an elegant Tuscan villa. The similarities between Cape Ann and Tuscany had inspired Mr. Hovey. Besides the same latitude they share extraordinary natural beauty, a climate tempered by ocean currents and the glowing peachy-amber light that creates a Mecca for artists. Mr. Hovey's glorious Italianate manor is now a Bed & Breakfast. We invite you to come and revel in his vision.
And quite a wonderful vision it is. Across Hovey House's panoramic view of the harbor, boats of every description glide like swans as guests sip breakfast coffee on the awning covered verandah.
Imagine endless possibilities for exciting activities. A short walk down the hill leads to America's oldest working seaport where visitors can stroll the harbor side or pick up a whale watch or schooner cruise. Equally accessible are world class museums, fun shops, art galleries, flea market, restaurants, historic junkets, bike and hiking trails, colorful local festivals and glorious parks and beaches.
Hovey House is available for weddings, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, engagement, anniversary or other special parties. |

Within, the accommodations are spacious and welcoming. Beautifully restored bedrooms boast period furnishings, original artwork, cozy sitting areas and exceptional antique beds. Some have working fireplaces.
An oil-on-canvas mural lines the dining room; the living room's marble fireplace, flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows, is topped by a splendid gilt mirror, and the bathrooms feature period art deco tiles and luxuriously deep tubs.
Imagine crystal chandeliers suspended from twelve foot ceilings, gleaming parquet floors, antique French wallpaper and fresh flowers-and they're just part of what make Hovey House special.
Breakfasts at Hovey House feature regional New England specialties with an emphasis on Gloucester's Italian and Portuguese traditions.
